Friday News Stuff | |
It’s a Holiday Weekend here in the US (our offices are closed today in observance of Independence Day), so I’m going to keep it short and sweet. Let’s do it:
Photo Walk Update
By Monday we’ll have nearly 25,000 photographers registered for Photo Walks in 911 cities around the world. My buddy (and Photo Walk leader for [...] | | 7/3/2009 5:41:25 AM - Photoshop Insider |

How to Shoot Fireworks | |
With the 4th of July coming up tomorrow (The 4th is Independance Day in the US, and we celebrate with Fireworks), I thought I’d run a quick blurb from Vol. 1 of my book, The Digital Photography Book on how to shoot Fireworks (like I did last year around this time). Here ya go:

Check out this Way Cool Video from Jill Enfield | | Friend of the blog Richard Rabinowitz (former Publisher of Popular Photography and American Photo) turned me onto this very cool time lapse video from photographer Jill Enfield that is really going to strike a chord with anyone who has ever developed their own film. But beyond that, this two minute video is just darn cool, [...] | | 7/3/2009 5:31:01 AM - Photoshop Insider |

Boot Camp II: Assignment #2 | The second Boot Camp II assignment will be easier than the headshot assignment, logistically. But calorically speaking, it will be far more dangerous.
And since you will not have to wrangle a model for this shoot (not a living one, at least) we are going to up the difficulty level by tightening up the deadline a bit.
Hit the jump for the details -- and some internal and external resources to help you out. __________
A Little Belt Tightening
It's probably safe to say that many of us are eating out less often than we were at this time last year. But that is not the kind of belt tightening of which I am speaking.
For me, it is not so much the belt itself that is getting smaller, but rather that the job the belt has to do has gotten larger. Me and food, we were made for each other. And we have had an especially close relationship over the last six months or so, when I have been on the road more than off. So this summer I am practicing a little girth control.
Which is why I am already questioning the wisdom of the second BCII assignment -- to photograph a gastronomic subject so well that it will cause me to go off the wagon.
The vast majority of you are using small lights, and they are especially well-suited for this kind of an assignment. In fact, as we showed last week, you can create very elegant light for food ... | | 7/3/2009 3:30:00 AM - Strobist |

Publishing a Photography Book the Traditional Way | |
Photography: Chris Burkard
The Web might have made it easy to show your images to admirers but the appeal of the old methods of displaying pictures still hasn’t disappeared. Photographers continue to look enviously at gallery walls, and a name on the cover of a photography book still delivers the kind of warm fuzzies that no [...] | | 7/2/2009 2:17:53 PM - Photopreneur |

Feedback, please: Copying hex values | Designer/Twitter crazy person Sam Potts made what I thought was a good suggestion earlier today: The Copy Color as HTML in the color panel is awesome. Everyone uses it all the time. However, times have changed and my guess is that most of the people who use this are writing their colors in CSS. So you always have to delete the color="" part after you paste it into a style sheet. It would be awesome to simply have a "Copy Color Hex Code" option and get #CCFF00 instead of the full color="#CCFF00" tag. Or, to cover both bases, add to the panel menu: Copy Color as HTML ---> color="#CCFF00" as it is now AND Copy Color as CSS ---> color:#CCFF00 I know it's a tweaky query, but if you have a preference, please chime in. | | 7/2/2009 2:50:41 AM - John Nack |

It’s Unexpected No-Guest-Blog Wednesday | | Hi Gang:
I wasn’t able to get the completed post for this week’s guest blogger in time for posting, so unfortunately today will be “Unexpected No-Guest-Blog” Wednesday.

RIBA Trust Presents Exhibition on Valerio Olgiati | | The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) announced an exhibition celebrating Swiss architect Valerio Olgiati, examining seven of his projects from the last few years including his extraordinary competition winning design for the Perm Museum XXI in Russia; the National Park Visitor's Centre at Zernez, Switzerland with its unique spatial mirroring and the striking black exterior and interiors of his own office at Flims - the latter resulting from his belief that dark interiors make for a better appreciation of the exterior world from within, creating more extrovert, public spaces.

Super cool video stabilization technology | Adobe researchers Hailin Jin and Aseem Agarwala*, collaborating with U.Wisconsin prof. Michael Gleicher & Feng Liu, have unveiled their work on "Content-Preserving Warps for 3D Video Stabilization." In other words, their tech can give your (and my) crappy hand-held footage the look of a Steadicam shot. Check out the demonstration video, shot at & around Adobe's Seattle office. (Hello, Fremont Lenin!) It compares the new technique to what's available in iMovie '09 and other commercial tools. As with all research papers/demos, I should point out making technology ready for real-world use can require plenty of additional work & tuning. Still, these developments are encouraging. [Via] [Previously: Healing Brush & Content-Aware Scaling on (really good) drugs.]
* If you've created a panorama using Photoshop, you've used Hailin's (image alignment) and Aseem's (image blending) work. | | 6/30/2009 10:58:55 PM - John Nack |

Studio @ Home - Easy Lighting | Once we have explored location and a few basic backdrops options we are going to hit lighting. The backdrop assignment will be up next. However, I thought it would not be fair to do the first assignment without even a little bit of home lighting discussion.
After all, light is the substance from which your photograph is made of.
There are several lighting options if you are building up your home studio: Tungsten, Halogen, Florescent, small speedlites and the big canons - studio flashes. Each with its vices and merits. I will dedicate a full post to explore the several options. But just to get things started, I wanted to discuss the most available light of all: Available Light.

Yuri Arcurs: Mr. Microstock | Do you dabble in stock photography? Maybe, say, a little microstock photography?
If you do, this is the guy you are up against.
To say Yuri Arcurs has the game figured out would be a bit of an understatement. He sells nearly 2,000 images a day, 24/7/365.
Hit the jump for a video tour of his insane, made-for-micro studio, and a look at his lighting techniques. __________
Made for Micro
I have to admit that when I first started watching this I thought it was one of those parody videos. But then I realized that Yuri (a nom de photo used by Jacob Wackerhausen) has basically beaten the microstock equivalent of the Kobayashi Maru by creating an entire facility based around the needs of microstock.
Insanity? Genius? Maybe a little bit of both:
