I've been seeing the new Blu Ray and HD formats in DVD stores.
I haven't compared them to the standard format, but I was wondering if anyone here is interested in them? |

My motto is if the other one works, do we really need a different way so soon after the past new way? I don't know. Personally I cannot afford these new formats, mostly because I do not have the means to play them, etc. |

I'm sure that there won't be enough of an improvement over the standard DVD format for me to replace any DVDs I have now.
I gave up most of my vinyl albums for CDs, and I'm alright with that. I haven't gone back to listen to that analog "warmth" though. |

It seems that they will benefit most the Music and Film industry since it'll be harder to hack and pirate Blu Ray and HD discs. For me, DVD is fine, that's a lot of pictures I can stuff into one. |

I wouldn't mind trying the new Blue-Ray but it's way too expensive. I may be tempted to try it when the price drops but for now DVD's are fine for me. |

I'm kind of upset that they came up with these new formats because I've just started to build a nice movie collection in DVD formats. Now I don't want them to become obsolete like the video tapes and be replaced by these new formats.
I've hearrd somone in the store the other day that the movies on HD are quite a blast and that they don't even compare with the regular dvds. |

Once you start building a collection in HD or Blu Ray, I'm sure the tech guys will come out with a new storage format.

I am more interested in the both formats of DVDs. Blue ray is the new technology, which will be more common in next couple of years soon. It will happen soon. HD is the high definition presentation of video and audio. It is already rocking the multimedia market. |

You are correct that they film industry is trying to use the new formats to get a new drm system in place but like last time it has already been cracked.
It does have the good side that hdtv and dvd don't work together.
as to which format will win? I don't care, I will wait till one buy in. Let the first adopters work it out.

I am not into the different methodes, but I remember a long time ago when Beta and VHS were competing about the market of video tapes (yeas I said a long long time ago). Then Beta lost, even though it was technical better than VHS, and smaller.....
I had both.....but ja how it goes now is who gets best buy in by the industry |

That was a classic example of how superior marketing can win out over technical superiority. I have not done much research into the new formats. I will wait till one is the victor, then look at buying in. By that time the price will have dropped as well.

I have read that they are essentially the same. HD is more expensive apparently. |
