The ideal darkroom is pitch black, but total darkness is sometimes difficult to achieve in the home, especially if you have commandeered a room that also serves other purposes, such as a bathroom or kitchen. Here's a good rule of thumb for the minimum amount of darkness required - if you don't see any light in the room over a period of five minutes, it's dark enough for normal usage. Where is your darkroom? Mine is in my back room. I happen to not have any windows.

You can get thick curtains from Walmart. It depends on the type of budget you are working with.

We had a darkroom in the back part of the basement when we actually had a basement.  :-)  It was perfect and already had the water source, etc.  We just needed to partition it off.

We're now in a home without a basement so if we want to build another darkroom, it would take some serious thought about where the best spot for it would be.

Back when I first got in to photography, I thought it would be cool to have a darkroom in the house. I thought about learning how to develop pictures and then constructing one in the basement. Then, I got in to digital photography and that all went by the wayside.

Now, I thing that the skill of being able to develop pictures is one that would be cool to have, so I am thinking about learning again, but not sure where I could learn. Any ideas?

There are a lot of photography sites on the internet that will tell you how to go about developing your own pictures. I know that it can be challenging to make your own dark room but it's worth it if you're serious about developing your own photos. It can save money and time to have your own studio.
