Does speed matter with flash memory?

So, you have all seen the different flash memory available for your cameras, but what to buy?  Does the speed of the memory really matter?

My opinion is this:  With point and shoot digital cameras, it probably does, since you can only take pictures as fast as they will save to the memory card.  On a digital SLR, I would think that speed doesn't matter as much because most DSLRs have a memory buffer that stores pictures while it writes to the memory card.  Of course, you would want a faster memory card if you think you may fill the buffer.

Who knows?  Are my theories correct?  Am I way off base?
