I watched Poseidon yesterday, which is the "remake" of The Poseidon Adventure about the luxury cruise liner getting hit by a rogue wave.

I think the opening shot would be of interest to most people here. In a feature on the DVD, the director said it was two and a half minutes, and was the longest CGI shot to date if I remember correctly.

It involves a shot that moves around the ship, and catches an actor jogging on deck then moves in for a medium closeup.

I haven't seen that one yet (think it had so-so reviews).. but it does remind me about how CGI looks out-of-date so quickly.

I don't remember what movie it was, but I saw one recently where it featured 'ground-breaking' CGI for it's time (1999, 2000-ish), and now it just looks so fake. Lord of the Rings blew my mind but the part when Legolas was screwing around on the big elephant-thing looked super fake.

I wonder when we will reach the point where there's absolutely no telling what's real and what's fake anymore.. 10 years?

I can imagine Poseidon getting so-so reviews.

I know what you mean about CGI. I liked the shot in question, but in some movies, especially of a few years ago I think the CGI makes them start to look like video games. I liked Pearl Harbor and I certainly have never seen anything like that in real life, but some of the explosions during the attack look sort of fake to me.

I don't know when we won't be able to tell the difference between CGI and reality. At this point, I'm sure that the bigger your budget is, the better your results can be.

Ditto on Legolas. That scene looked so PS2. Spiderman tends to do that, too, sometimes.

I think Spiderman's an excellent example of that, too. In that case, I think that psychologically I may cut the movie a little more slack because it's coming from a comic book.

I loved the Spiderman comics and cartoons as a kid. Plus I've never seen Doc Octopus walking around on his tentacles in real life, so who am I to say it looks fake?

Hey, I can't find a smilie! :(

Same goes for Catwoman. Some of the scenes look so face, but then again, a woman blessed by the spirit of the egyptian cat goddess, right?

One of my favourite movie shots is from the roof scene in The Shawshank Redemption, where Tim Robbins' character is held near the edge of the roof by the prison guard.

I don't think it was CGI. I think it's just a great shot using a small crane on a dolly track or something like that. I like to watch that shot in slow motion.

Did you guys see that movie and do you remember that shot?

Didn't catch that one but did see the Poseidon adventure.

Before I get tarred and feathered.. it was on free pay tv on vacation. :)

The opening shot.. what can I say.. pretty fake. I was watching Carneval from Rio the other night and they somehow managed to rig up a camera that basically circles the whole parade. If they can do that for a live TV event, it's beyond me why a hollywood movie needs to fake out a circle around a cruise ship. Obviously there's some fancy camera moves but I can't see why you couldn't blend some CGI with real footage.

I'd love to see that shot of the parade. I wonder if they used a suspension system the way they have at football games so the camera's over the field?

I suppose that would be trickier on a ship in the ocean if there's no solid ground or objects to rig to. I don't know - I find it interesting to try to figure out how they do some shots.

I am not interested in watching that movie Poseidon , after seeing to some of the film clips. I watched the trailer before the film release, it was superb and I was in the idea to watch the movie but, after seeing the clips of that movie in my regional satellite channel I changed my decision and not interested after this. The film is not that much good to watch!

But you have to admit that watching just to see certain shots that were taken is interesting. I want to know how they took the shots of the parade.

I'm not interested enough in Poseidon to rent it but I am curious about that shot. It's true that CG goes out of date really quickly but I think that if it's done artfully then it will take longer to become obsolete. The CG work in the Frank Miller movies (300 and Sin City) is one of the best examples of tasteful work that I can think of off the top of my head. Some might disagree but I think the way computer graphics were used in those movies actually worked really well.
