I have resisted jumping to Vista for now. I have gotten XP to a fairly comfortable semi-stable condition. Every 6 months or so I have to rebuild the system, so I don't trust Vista to be any better. That plus I don'y have the video card for the better features.

But i'm happy with my XP now. =)

Do not even think of upgrading to Vista for another year or so, and then only if your computer is top of the range with more memory and hard drive space than you ever thought neccessary. I bought a brand new, top of the range laptop and it came with vista installed. I gave it six weeks before I was so totally sick of the hanging, system crashes and the fact that this brand new machine ran like molasses and I went back to XP. Just installed it two days ago.

Stick with XP, it's not wonderful but it's the best on offer.

it requires at least a 1gb ram to run.
if you're playing with photoshop, you probably need 2gb ram?
prob this explains the hang.

Yes, i agree with you. My friend buy a Compaq laptop with vista already installed. The laptop has 1Gb RAM but still it creates problem. It generally hangs while we try to run some heavy software on that! Never go for Vista even if you get that FREE! Stick to Xp.

It will ruin your computer.

My machine has 2gb already and it still hung. I never run anything that is resource intensive either. Good hard drive size, fast processor.

The trouble with avoiding even free Vista is that you often have to pay MORE to downgrade. Totally illogical.

I do not plan to use Vista unless forced to. My SO has had MAJOR issues with Vista, causing many computer crashes.

I HATE vista. I bought a new laptop, so I was forced to use Vista. Vista asks permission for EVERYTHING and things like photoshop, illustrator and flash are a nightmare to install. With flash I even had problems, everything was really slow. I paniced my laptop wasn't good, but it was just that vista doesn't like flash. (with some online research I found a solution to change some settings, but it's irritating)

Also my computer is really slow with vista and the size it takes on your hard disk is huge.

If I'm right, Microsoft even told everyone not to buy Vista, but to stick with XP... if that doesn't say enough ;)

I have not even seen vista and don't want to use it. But i would at least try it once if I got it. There are very few people using vista in my place.

I think if you are thinking about business, you should go with some kind of Xp and not Vista. I mean that is just how I think you should think. I'm not a big fan of Vista but it isn't all that bad either.

Isn't all that bad? It's a nightmare! :p Even the creaters (microsoft) says they made a big mistake with making Vista.

The only nice thing in vista is why Vista is named Vista (it means "view") ... the new opton to view multiple windows at once and scroll trough them, but they stole this from Mac.

I still am running XP on both of my computers. It's not encouraging hearing about the Vista problems.

I guess all we can do is keep going with XP and when we have to upgrade, make sure we get computers fast enough with sufficient memory to handle Vista, right?

That's assuming you don't just keep running XP into the next decade, I guess.

Vista takes up too much time to me, I mean I like to be able to skim through my computer without havning to have permission to do so.

I have XP. I think Vista was released too soon and I know a lot of people who are having problems with it not being compatible with their programs.

I really think that if they had provided more legacy device support, it would have made the transition a little easier. It also didn't help that Vista is nothing like XP really. At this point, my wife and kids have XP on their PCs and they will stay that way for a while. We will probably not upgrade until forced to.

For those that have Vista and want to make it a little more livable, I recommend this following article. Link is below:

We bought a new computer that ran Vista. Soon enough we were considering downgrading to XP, but I hated that just as much. Instead we decided to switch to Mac. I returned the Dell and bough a MacBook from the Apple Store at the mall. I have yet to regret my decision. I currently run XP Linux and OS X on it.

Congrats to you ashmin on making the switch! I dabbled with Apples for years before making the full switch about 2 years ago. I bought a PowerMac G5 and never looked back. I have since purchased a MacBook Pro and am very happy with my Macs. I love that I am able to take them in to the Apple Store and talk to the Mac Geniuses if I need support. Where can you do that with a PC?

I haven't heard anything but bad about Vista and the general opinion seems to be that, if you can avoid it, don't bother with Vista for another year or so when hopefully most of the big problems will be ironed out enough to make it usable. For now XP is working fine for me and I can't see any real reason to make the switch over.

I know that most corporate environments are sticking with XP for a while. In the last company I worked for, I purchased all the computer equipment, so I had to work closely with our image team and the hardware vendor. We had to make special arrangements to downgrade to XP in our agreements.

I can imagine that downgrading for an entire company would get pretty difficult because Microsoft is really trying to push Vista even though it's becoming well known that it's far too buggy to work well for anyone yet. I don't think I'd like having to use Vista upon working for a new company so it's good that you did the work to make it comfortable for the team.
