Has anyone had any experience of submitting photographs to a free stock photo site? Personally I like sxc.hu very much as the majority of pictures there have little or no restrictions and are great. I've used them for banners and so on in the past.

I just got my first digital camera (yes, I'm behind the times, I know!). Once I get the hang of it a little more I would like to give something back to the community there. Not that my shots will be anything spectacular, mind you, but I thought I'd ask for opinions on the pros and cons of submitting to these types of sites from those of you that may have already trodden that path. Thanks!

Doesn't anyone have any thoughts on this they can share please? I don't want to waste time doing it somewhere if they can be made better use elsewhere. Perhaps I'm looking at it all wrong and it's better to avoid them. I'd really appreciate some help on this.

Morguefile is also a great free photo community, it all depends on the volume of content you are creating and what your end goals are. In my experience lots of people intend offering free lower-quality/not so marketable shots as a means to increase their 'juice' as a photographer, however the harsh reality is many of the people who download free photos are interested only the lack of a price and not exploring the rest of the Artists portfolio or possible commercial offerings.

Flickr is a genuine internet phenomenon, but they still haven't found a way to transition into selling photos: their money is made by cross-marketing, photo storage fees, and other 'accessory' services for the photographers. If you just want to get your photos seen and get critiques from peers, places like that are the way to go.
